Taylor’s Tunes: Kids These Days

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

This past week, Her Campus editor Bri introduced me to an up-and-coming band, Kids These Days (courtesy of her friend, Maya). Kids These Days are a seven-piece band from Chicago that blend, jazz, blues and hip-hop. KTD also features multiple vocalists such as Macie Stewart (who also plays keys) as well as Liam Cunningham and rapper Vic Mensa.

Multiple genres? Lady involvement? I have to say; I am a sucker for trombone solos so they sound pretty good to me. Also on their Facebook page under their interests they write, “We enjoy positive vibrations and dope music.” Cute. I also want to point out that these kids seem pretty young. Like high school young. But who knows? You should definitely check them out when you get the chance! Below is their video for “My Days”

Shifting gears a bit, I also wanted to highlight another song that my friends and I have been listening to a lot lately from the South African rap group Die Antwoord, which in Afrikaans means “The Answer.” Anyway, if you know anything about Die Antwoord it’s that they are pretty out there. Die Antwoord consists of Yo-Landi, who is a very tiny woman that has a really high voice, Ninja who never has a shirt on and DJ Hi-Tek, who is a DJ.

Apparently Yo-Landi and Ninja are simply stage personas and have actually been part of the South African music scene for many years. The song I am talking about is “I Fink U Freeky” (actual spelling, not kidding). Like all of Die Antwoord’s other videos, the one for “I Fink U Freeky” is pretty weird and disturbing but the song itself is great. Watch it below:

See what I mean? The cockroach in the eggs? Yo-Landi’s pupil contacts? The fact that she had rats running all over her? What’s even more crazy is that I recently learned that Ninja and Yo-Landi have a child together. WTF!?! Obviously this has nothing to do with the video itself but I refuse to believe that that tiny woman was able to birth a child. Oh well. I hope you didn’t think that video was a waste of time. You have to admit the song is good!

OK, that’s all I have for this week friends. The music world has been tumultuous lately so be sure to check back next week!
