Taylor’s Tunes: Songs you can bring home to mom

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.

Hey everyone. Ever since I started this blog, my mom requested a post discussing music that she would enjoy. I figured, why not? When I’m home, she does my laundry, makes me delicious and hearty lunches and puts my cuddly flannel sheets on my bed in the winter. The least I can do is guide her to culturally relevant and appealing music. The time has finally come Tracy. Here are some artists for all you and all the other moms reading this (aka zero).

Beach House

A male/female duo that writes simple yet beautiful songs. It also doesn’t hurt that singer Victoria Legrand’s voice sounds classically trained. To be honest, I haven’t given their other albums a listen besides last years Teen Dream but have yet to find a song on that album that I dislike.

Listen while: On long car rides (such as the trip to North Platte, mom).

St. Vincent

Prior to adopting the moniker St. Vincent, Annie Clark played in Sufjan Stevens’ touring band. Since going solo, St. Vincent has released three albums (the most current, Strange Mercy back in September), toured extensively, and received near universal critical accolade. Although she inhabits the category of solo-female songwriter, Clark strays from typical female songwriting topics and her soothing croon juxtaposes her sometimes disturbing lyrical content. Also this video for Cruel is pretty weird.

Listen while: Cleaning, cooking, doing laundry. The music will keep you interested while doing these mundane tasks.

Beyonce

Beyonce is the baddest chick in the game (for you moms, that means she’s the best current pop singer) with some serious staying power. I’m pretty sure most moms out there have heard of her simply because of her omnipresence: she’s all over the radio, married to Jay-Z, and the face of some large beauty product provider (Covergirl)? Point is, Beyonce’s music is as hot as she is.

Listen while: Jazzercising, getting ready to go out (you still do that, right mom?)

Radiohead

Mature and intelligent, Radiohead is a band that needs no introduction. Due to the length of their career, Radiohead is a band that appeals to many generations as well as spans many genres. Both are perfect for moms looking to expand their musical taste. And with enough listen, you too can join in on those dumb, arbitrary debates about which album of theirs is the best.

Of course, I left out many artists that moms would love. These include but are not limited to: Beach House, Aphex Twin, Grizzly Bear, Silver Jews, Drake, Adele, Broken Social Scene, Elliott Smith, etc. etc.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this mom! And any other moms who may be reading this…?
