Sorority Rush 2011: Dress to Impress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stanford chapter.

Open House
Let us see your peacock. You’ll be seeing every sorority, so this is the night to channel every sorority movie you’ve ever seen. Think “House Bunny” meets “Legally Blonde.” Make it cute, make it pop and above all, make sure you don’t wear something so uncomfortable you’ll want to slit your wrists after two or three hours.  Yeah, it’s great to live by the “pain is beauty” mantra, but after seven hours of getting your girl flirt on, you’re going to hate yourself no matter what, so don’t make it because of your too-tight/too-warm/too-itchy outfit.
Our recommendation: Tiered skirt, fitted tank, and wrap

Invite #1: Skit Night
Tonight is basically going to be a repeat of Open House, you’ll just be girl flirting for longer periods of time with each girl. Rush gets progressively dressier each night, so it’s best to wear something a little more sophisticated. Think Devil Wears Prada, but on a college budget (minus the “fashion-forward” hats and gloves). Keep it simple!
Our recommendation: Fitted bandage or pencil skirt, skinny belt, and lace top

Invite #2: Philanthropy Night
Open up your recruitment schedule; look at the part where it says “you will likely be sitting on the floor.” Um, excuse me, you will likely be sitting on the floor? Yeah… no, you definitely will be — for the entire time. So how are you supposed to pull off wearing a spring dress if you’re going to pop a squat the whole time? Flowy “goddess” mini-dresses are definitely “in” on Stanford’s wannabe-model campus (i.e. digital camera + facebook + open mouth), and they will definitely be the style of the night among the rushees who know better.
Our recommendation:Asymmetric flare mini-dress

Preference Night
Remember that gorgeous chiffon dress you’ve got hanging in your closet that you never thought you’d have an occasion to wear to? Bam. Occasion. Silver platter. Tonight is definitely the most formal night you’ll have your freshman year, including frosh formal and whatever end-of-year event your dorm decides to have with its leftover funds. You don’t need to go crazy with the accessories; just make sure you look your best! And as always, walk the walk. Show off what you’ve got and carry yourself like you’re more than some self-conscious high schooler.  Tonight is the night to make your last impression on the girls that are going to become your sisters—make it count!
Our recommendation:  Cocktail dress. Is there really any other option?
