Despite going to school to learn, we all know that college is far from being just a place of learning; it’s a vibrant community filled with opportunities for self-growth, learning, and connection with yourself and your community. When you first step onto Stevens’ picturesque campus, you might be overwhelmed by first-year orientation and the sheer number of clubs and student organizations at the Flock Party. If you haven’t quite found your ‘people’ yet, or if you even want to branch out in general, you might start to wonder, “Where do I fit in?” However, fear not, because this guide is here to help you navigate the exciting world of Stevens and find your perfect fit.

Figure Yourself Out First!

First and foremost, explore your interests! Take some time to reflect on your interests and passions to find out what really engages you. Are you a tech enthusiast, an aspiring entrepreneur, or a creative artist? Stevens offers a plethora of clubs and organizations that cater to a wide range of interests. Whether you’re into coding, robotics, environmental advocacy, or writing, there’s surely a place for you here.

Go to the Flock Party!

Make sure you are attending the Flock Party, Stevens’ annual student organization fair! Stevens hosts an annual Flock Party that brings all the clubs and groups together in one place. It’s the perfect opportunity to stroll through the booths, chat with current members, and gather information about each group. You can even sign up for email lists to stay informed about their activities.

Check Social Media!

If you happen to miss the Flock Party and are eager to get involved ASAP, reach out through socials! Many student organizations maintain a strong online presence. You can find their Facebook groups, Instagram accounts, and even Discord servers (forgive us, it is a tech school after all). These platforms are great for staying updated on events, meetings, and discussions.

Show Up!

Once you’ve narrowed down your interests, start attending club meetings and showing face. It’s an excellent way to meet like-minded individuals who share your passion. Feel free to ask questions and see if the club’s mission aligns with your own goals.

Explore!

While it’s essential to explore your interests, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone too. College is a pivotal time in all our lives, especially in terms of personal growth, and trying something new can be incredibly rewarding. Attend a meeting of a club or organization you’ve never considered before. You might even discover a hidden passion or talent (or just meet some super cool people).

Be a Leader!

This comes a little later down the line, but if you connect with a certain organization really well, being a part of the leadership team in a student organization can be an incredibly fulfilling experience. It’s not only a chance to give back to the community but also a great way to build leadership skills and make lasting connections with the members of the organization.

Don’t Spread Yourself Too Thin!

As you explore different clubs and organizations, remember that balance is crucial. You are a student, first and foremost, and you only have so many weekday evenings to fill with GBMs! That being said, you don’t have to join every single group that piques your interest. Focus on a few that truly resonate with you and allow you to manage your time effectively. The quality of your involvement is infinitely more valuable than the quantity.

Ask!

Upperclassmen are, more often than not, super open to helping students find their place on campus! Don’t hesitate to seek advice from upperclassmen, advisors, faculty members, or even administrators! They can provide insights into various student organizations and help you make informed choices based on your goals and interests.

Embrace Inclusivity!

College, overall, is an extraordinary journey that has the power to burst your bubble and unveil a world of possibilities. It’s an opportunity to expand your horizons and embrace connections with people from so many diverse backgrounds and cultures. In this chapter of your life, be open to connections that will enrich your life experience and mold you into a more worldly, inspiring individual.

Give Yourself Grace <3

Finding your fit definitely does not happen overnight. It’s perfectly normal to try a few clubs or organizations before discovering the one that truly feels like home. Patience is the key to success in this journey, and sometimes a call home, or talk with a therapist, can help put everything into perspective.

In conclusion, finding your fit at Stevens is all about exploration, curiosity, and self-discovery: it is about you! Going out with the intention to embrace new experiences and forge connections will make all the difference. So, as you embark on this exciting journey, remember to take your time, stay true to your passions, and embrace the adventure of finding your place in this thriving community!
