I’ve had a few jobs in my lifetime. Some of them I loved and some of them I wanted to quit on the first day but, all of them were pivotal in the development of my character that comes to you today. With the help of my favorite cast members from Gossip Girl, it’s time to describe what it’s like working on campus!
Depending on your schedule, you can be going in to work anytime between 8 am and 5 pm on Monday-Friday. If you’ve gotten the early bird shift like I did before, the chances that you’re walking in with breakfast is highly likely. Many mornings have been spent channeling my inner B with a yogurt from The Bean’s List coffee shop and an unrelenting daydream about sitting on the steps of the Met as I race through the halls to arrive on time.
Working in an office also means that I am almost like an extra secretary. It also means that I have had many incidents when I did the wrong thing while answering the phones. “Oh, you meant the dean?? I thought you said sunscreen! Ha! Please hold one moment.”
A perk of working on campus is definitely the commute! Waking up full of fierceness and knowing that I won’t have to rush because my job is a serene walk across the lake is like the best gift of all time. I can be content with the amount of time I spend putting on makeup and not worry! It’s also great because you can leave most of your things at work to go to class! They make it easy for you!
If your office is anything like mine, then there are events happening that are sponsored by us all the time! This includes things like tabling events and information sessions. Most, if not all of these, require the presence of food and when there’s some left, I get first dibs! Chartwells and their cookies are going to be the death of me.
Working on campus also means that the people in your office understand the college student struggle. This means that they don’t even bat an eyelash at you diligently typing a research paper or gluing some paper together for an art class. (Definitely, a perk!)
Working on campus means that you’re able to be friends with your co-workers who also go to your school, you’re able to get things done quickly, and you have a support network of professionals who have watched you do work and want to help you! It’s a win-win situation in my eyes.
