The Best Rom-Coms

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stonehill chapter.

For decades, romantic comedies have lured women into the movie theaters with their handsome male leads and their cliché messages about love.  Despite their predictability, comedies with romance are hard to resist. However, their themes and storylines can become redundant, which is why I enjoy romantic comedies that deviate from the formulaic approach. Movies like Valentine’s Day and He’s Just Not That Into You always have a solid cast of actors, but their storylines are always weak and filled with corny dialogue. If you are looking for something different, I recommend Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, whichis a bizarre yet thought provoking film. Jim Carrey stars alongside the extraordinary Kate Winslet in this story about a couple that wants nothing more than to erase each other from their memories. This movie will not only make you laugh, it will also make you think about love in a completely different way.

My next pick would have to be 500 Days of Summer starring Joseph Gordon Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. This movie is innovative, smart, and will make you fall in love with Joseph Gordon Levitt, if you haven’t already. His charm is irresistible, but it is the dialogue between him and Deschanel that makes this film such a pleasure to watch. Like Eternal Sunshine, this movie is unique and breaks the standard formula that almost every romantic comedy follows. So this Valentine’s Day, instead of watching movies that are completely unoriginal, watch either Eternal Sunshine or 500 Days of Summer, because unlike other romantic comedies, these are movies you surely won’t forget.
