If you’re anything like me, finding new music is something I am always in search of. I try and make new playlists for every season, but always struggle to fill those playlists with new songs that I am not sick of hearing yet. I always find myself going back to the same songs I have loved in the past, but after a while they start to lose the same feeling they once gave me. When I was making my most recent playlist for fall, I really wanted to switch up my music. Other than Noah Kahan, and Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts that I had been playing on repeat, I made it my mission to fill the rest of my playlist with completely new music. Here are some tips for how I found new music:

Take advantage of Spotify’s pre-curated playlists!

This was the main way that I found new music because of how easy it was to simply add it from one playlist to another. I’ve really been loving the “day-lists” that Spotify gives you at different times throughout the day. The playlists are based on what type of music you listen to at various times. For example, as I am writing this on a Sunday evening, my day-list is called “Lyricism masterpiece Sunday evening.” This playlist is filled with relaxing and acoustic music that I often listen to when doing homework and preparing for the week ahead. I have found that these playlist contain a lot of music that I haven’t heard before, so I love to just put the playlist on shuffle and see what comes on.

Look on Tik Tok!

Scrolling on Tik Tok is sometimes how I find some of my new favorite songs. Whether it’s a trending sound, or a song that a songwriter is trying to promote, this can be one of the easiest ways to find a new song. I also just search “song recommendations” into the search bar and see what comes up. There’s millions of Tik Toks out there with song ideas for all different genres, so this is a quick and easy way to discover new music.

Ask your friends and family!

No matter who you ask, everyone’s music tastes varies, so this can be a great way to learn about new music and artists. When I’m in a rut of finding songs to add to my playlists, I often will text my group chat with all of my friends, and I automatically have at least 7 or 8 new songs to add. We also like to share our own playlists with each other to share what we have been listening to, which helps each other get new ideas. There is also a way on Spotify to create a joint playlist based off of songs that you both often listen to. Being able to share music with one another is a great way to get new music and expand your playlists!

Happy listening!
