Philip Seymour Hoffman Dies at 46

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stonehill chapter.

The second day of February brought sad news to movie lovers everywhere. Phillip Seymour Hoffman, one of Hollywood’s finest actors, had overdosed on heroin and was found dead in his Greenwich Village apartment.  Hoffman was without a doubt one of today’s most versatile actors. The man was in no way typecast and never dared to take on a safe role. He was a performer who truly took chances and we loved him for it. Some of his most notable roles including Scotty J. in Boogie Nights, Father Brendan Flynn in Doubt and his Oscar-winning role as Truman Capote in Capote.

A close friend had found the actor dead and investigators confirmed the he had a syringe in his arm. Hoffman was known to have struggled with addiction in the past, but this still came as a shock to those who knew him. He was found with five empty bags of heroin surrounding and upwards of 65 more unused bags, according to ABC News.

As far as his unfinished projects go, Hoffman was in the middle of filming a Showtime Series Happyish, which sources say is unlikely to resume filming due to his death. He also had a week of filming for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 2,” but Lionsgate announced his death will not affect the release of the film.

Hoffman was the father of three children and died at the age of 46. Our thoughts are with his friends, family and those of us who greatly admired his tremendous work.
