You heard me right: Galentine’s day. Valentine’s day is a holiday where couples spend their time eating at fancy restaurants, indulging in boxes of assorted chocolates, and giving each other bouquets of roses. The day before Valentine’s day, however, is about laughing with your girlfriends, pampering yourselves, and watching movies as if you were in high school.
The purpose of Galentine’s day is to appreciate that although you may not have found the “one” to spend the most romantic day of the year with, you still have your friends. Your friends can watch you be yourself in any way, shape, or form. If you want to be weird, you can be weird. If you want to laugh, so hard, that water comes out of your nose, then do it. And if you want to get a big box of Russel Stover’s for the group to eat, then get it and eat the whole box as if it would make your parents as proud as if you showed them a straight-A report card.
My friends and I used to think of Valentine’s day every year as the worst day of the year when we didn’t have a significant other to spend it with. We would always send each other candy grams at school to remind each other that we didn’t need anybody but ourselves to feel loved. Therefore, we started to spend the day before Valentine’s day together because there’s nothing better than a spa night to take the edge off watching other people go on romantic dates while you are going into the pharmacy and buying all the discounted candy after it goes on sale. This is a tradition we would continue even after we pursued relationships and had people to celebrate Valentine’s day with.
Some of the best days are spent doing exactly what you did as a teenager: eating lollipops, playing Truth or Dare, and looking at pictures of celebrities you wish you could marry. Why let those memories fade away, when you can recreate them? Trust me, your friends want to just as bad as you do.
Life can be stressful, but it doesn’t always have to be. This day is dedicated to complete distress no matter what you are dealing with. Slap on a face mask, paint your fingernails, toenails, or both. Play spa music. Throw some lemon slices into your water. It’s the perfect day to be perfect.
Here’s a list of activities you and your friends can do to celebrate your Galentine’s day, right:
- Watch a romantic comedy that you haven’t seen in years.
-
Example: The Notebook
- 2.) Bake something with a lot of chocolate.
-
Example: Chocolate mousse cake
- Practice Self Care.
-
Example: Make your own face mask at home
- Play a game.
-
Example: “For the Girls” meme game.
- Wear a cute outfit, take pictures in it, then change into sweatpants.
-
We all want to look cute, but we also want to be comfortable.
Galentine’s day can be something you and your friends look forward to every year. It doesn’t have to be any more than simple. Just relax, enjoy, and have fun!
