The semester is heating up, Seawolves, and by that I mean you’re probably taking exam after exam and writing paper after paper. These times are tough and it’s hard to stay afloat. Needing a little extra support is totally okay, so don’t be afraid to reach out to the people you care about if you need a little encouragement. However, I do understand that you may not want to do this for personal reasons, which is why I’m here! If you’re feeling a little extra stressed this week, take a second to decompress with me.
Academics are important, and feeling like you’re in over your head in schoolwork is common during times like these; you’re not alone. One of my favorite activities to do while stressed is reading, either cozied up with a physical copy or even on my phone. I’m a huge fan of fiction, specifically a good romance or thriller novel (and maybe a sprinkle of fantasy). I find that getting into a good book is a great way to keep your mind active while still taking a break at the same time. Trust me, I know picking up a book for fun doesn’t sound appealing to everyone. I used to be someone who vowed would never dare participate in the hobby; however, here I am, finding myself using a book as an afternoon escape from the reality of my homework.
Gave reading a chance and it’s still not your thing? No hard feelings, it isn’t for everyone. This one might sound a little odd, but, here me out: coloring. You heard me. I know you probably have those colored pencils from one of your classes, so you have half of the hobby technically covered (or you can hit up Shop Red West on campus for a pack). There are so many coloring books on Amazon, or you can print out pages from Google. If you’re someone with an IPad, you can even download pages onto your device and color straight on there! Personally, coloring helps me connect with my inner child, and sometimes I feel like she needs a little extra care when I’m feeling stressed over school. Doodling has a similar effect, or drawing, painting, or even sketching. Let your creativity show and pictures will convey all the words you might be too scared to say.
I have one word for you: music. If all else fails, hit shuffle on your favorite playlist and have yourself a mini-bedroom concert. Have a roommate? Include them in the fun! You never know, they could be needing a little pick-me-up too. If you’d rather do this on your own, you can even jam out in the shower- no one has to know a thing. It doesn’t even matter the genre of music, if you love it, it’s sure to wipe that stress away. Allow yourself to feel the music, it’ll most likely help you listen your worries away.
Take deep breaths- you’ve got this. Hype yourself up in the mirror, say some daily affirmations- get on a routine that’s beneficial for you. This tough time will pass; it will be okay. The stress school can put on an individual is harmful, so please be sure to check in on your loved ones and the people you care about. If you’re in need of outside support, you can always reach out to CAPS or connect with an outside professional. Listen to your body for what you need and be kind to your mind, it’s okay to feel like you need a little extra support- there are people somewhere willing to be there for you.
