Basic Info: Payal Thakkar is a junior Linguistics major from Staten Island, NY and she wants to save the world one day!
What made you choose Linguistics as your major?
It just kind of fell into place for me. After experimenting with quite a few majors, I tested the waters with Linguistics because I have always had a passion for language. I immediately fell in love with the major and am so happy with my decision!
You work as an intern for the Division of Student Life and Leadership. What does your job entail?
Through my internship, I created a BlackBoard page for Leadership Development Opportunities on Campus, which allows students to access different opportunities and positions easily as well as learn about all of the events and organizations on campus. I am working on creating surveys for students so that they will be able to find student organizations that fit their interests. I am also working on developing an interactive program that allows students who are looking to get involved find their pathway. The program will allow students to meet with leadership consultants who will help them find the perfect opportunities.
How has working in the Dean of Students office impacted you?
After my experiences in the Dean of Students office, I have realized that higher education is somewhere that I can see myself. Dean Stein has been such an inspiration to the university and to me and I would love to inspire students and impact a school the way he has done.
What work are you currently doing with the Residence Hall Association?
I am the fundraising coordinator of the RHA. Through this position I have been able to reach out to residents on campus and create programs that are innovative and charitable.
The Leadership Development minor is not very well known on campus and is still in its early stages. Can you share your thoughts about it?
The Leadership Development minor has opened so many doors for me. I have been able to learn what it really means and share what I have learned with developing leaders. I would recommend the minor to anyone because the material that we learn is related to every field of study.
You are one of the creators of SBU’s Dance-A-Thon. Where did you get the idea to create it?
The Dance-A-Thon is a 12-hour dance competition where students dance for as long as they can, and the “last man standing” wins a prize and a lot of recognition. It is a fundraiser and all of the proceeds will be given to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. The event was started because my friend and I thought it would be fun to try to implement a program that has been successful at other universities. Students can get involved by sending an email to SBUDanceathon@gmail.com or they can find the event on Facebook!
You are pretty involved on campus! How do you find time for friends, and what do you do in your downtime?
Although my days are pretty busy, I think it is important to have some fun with friends. I generally manage my time so that I have at least an hour or two a day for my downtime. I like to go out with friends, or we stay in and watch movies.
What is your favorite SBU tradition?
Strawberry Fest because the event brings students on campus to one place. The weather is always great and the campus is always brighter. Plus, I love strawberries!
