City Series: Krakow, Poland

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Strath chapter.

Krakow is fast-becoming one of the most popular destinations for a city break, and it really is one of the most elegant and culturally rich cities in all of Europe (not to mention incredibly cheap!). Whether you’re planning a weekend break or an Interrail trip, here are HC Strath’s top tips for a great holiday!

Where to Visit…

If you’re a keen historian then Krakow is the perfect city for you! Krakow somehow managed to survive WW2 and the city epitomises the beauty of Central Europe.  Take a walk to the Wawel Royal Castle for some spectacular photos overlooking the river, or head to the Main Square to join a walking tour of the city- it’s very cheap and is the best way to experience the city! If you’re interested in the history of the city, particularly before and during WW2, a visit to Schindler’s Factory is a must, and will stay with you long after you leave the city.

Where to Eat…

Krakow is filled with great restaurants and street food- and when it’s £5 a meal who could complain! It really is hard to find a bad restaurant in the city, and if you aren’t feeling too adventurous there are plenty of Italian restaurants and burger joints too! Our top pic is Plac Nowy 1, a trendy restaurant which offers lovely food at a very reasonable price- although you best book a table in advance, there is rarely an empty seat in the place! Or if you fancy a classic Italian, Trattoria Mamma Mia is a local favourite! If you have a sweet tooth, you must visit the Chimney Cake Bakery- it may not look a lot from the outside, but trust us when we say you do not want to miss out.

Where to Drink…

Krakow is known worldwide for its vodka, and at about £1 a drink you’d be stupid to say no! The city is full of great drinking spots- you’ll find a bar on every street. If you fancy a cocktail or two, head to Nova Resto Bar (we recommend ordering a Razz Mojito!), and there are plenty more bars on that same street. Make sure to try some of the famous vodka flavours too! If you’re planning a trip during Summer, why not head to a Polish supermarket, buy a couple of bottles of beer or cider, head down to the river and soak up the sun!
