There are many reasons to skip Valentine’s Day. Maybe you’re single. Maybe you don’t want to spend the money. Or maybe you and your BF want to skip the cheesy couples stuff. Well you’re in luck, collegiettes, because I have some alternatives for what you can do to escape the love fest! Because Valentine’s Day happens to be on a Friday this year, the possibilities are endless! Here are five easy and fun ideas to take your mind off the pink and red.
Have a movie night!Having some friends over for a movie night and watch your favourite movies! You might want to avoid chick flicks, because they may bring back that “forever alone” feeling if you’re single! Before you start your movie night, be sure to stop at your local grocery or candy store and stock up on your favourite goodies!
Have a games night! If you’re not into a movie marathon, why not have a games night? Classic games like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, Cranium, etc. will have you spending hours of unlimited fun!
Have a potluck!Get together with some friends and have a potluck! If you love food (and come on, what collegiette doesn’t?), then having a potluck is a no-brainer! It’s also a great way to catch up with friends you haven’t seen in a while!
Spend some time in the great outdoors!Get some friends together, or your beau if you’re in a relationship, and head on out to the outside world! Us collegiettes are always busy with work, school, extra curricular activities, etc. and spend the majority of our time indoors. Fredericton is a great for its trails that take you all over the city – they’re perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing! O’Dell Park also has gorgeous trails, a skating rink in the winter, and lots of hills for sledding. If you’re feeling adventurous you can check out Crabbe Mountain and go skiing and snowboarding! Crabbe Mountain has excellent rates for students and is open from 9am-9pm – so you can go as soon as your classes are over!
Perform a random act of kindness, or volunteer!Even if you don’t want to celebrate Valentine’s Day, you can still spread some love somehow! Pay it forward to fellow students by paying for their lunch at the cafeteria, or leaving an encouraging note on someone’s windshield! If you’re a couple, you can always try volunteering! Some examples are walking a dog at the Fredericton SPCA, or helping out at the Fredericton Food Bank! If it’s too short notice to obtain a volunteer shift, you can always go shopping or collect donations and drop them off! This is a great way to still help out!
You can find volunteer opportunities for the Fredericton SPCA here, and the Fredericton Food Bank here.
