“Suffolk In The City” is a segment on New England Cable News’ morning show where students at Suffolk get a chance to experience the real world of broadcasting. Every six months, four students are selected from a large pool of applicants. During their internship, they pitch segment ideas to NECN, do on the street interviews, edit their work, and introduce their pieces on live television. Melissa Graham is one of these lucky students.
Name: Melissa Graham
Graduation: Spring 2014
Major: Broadcast Journalism
Hometown: Norton, OH
Why did you choose to major in broadcast journalism?
I chose this major because I’ve always been a little nosey. I want to know what’s going on in the world and I think that a lot of people, especially my age, don’t keep up with the important issues of our times.
How did you decide to audition for Suffolk in the City?
I pretty much decided to audition for Suffolk in the City on a whim. The studio producer at 73 Tremont told me to come in for an audition, so I thought of a topic and I went for it. I think the main reason the audition went so well was because I didn’t prepare for it. I didn’t hype it up or practice in the mirror so it wasn’t scripted. In the broadcast world being candid is key, so that’s something I always keep in mind.
What is your favorite part of the job?
Honestly, I love informing people of what’s going. Whether it’s who won the ball game last night or an overview of the State of the Union address, I pride myself on being current and up to date. My friends think I’m crazy, but when they have questions I’m the first person they come to. I love that.
What is the most stressful part?
The most stressful part is going live. When you’re live there is no room for error so the pressure is really on. At the same time, it’s also the best part. During your live shot the adrenaline is pumping and the spot light is on you. It’s an indescribable feeling.
What was going through your head the first day you went live on NECN?
Standing in front of the camera for the first time was extremely intimidating. It was probably the most nervous I’ve ever been. I didn’t want to let the producers down and I knew I had family and friends watching, which only added to the anxiety.
What is it like working with the professionals on the show?
The people at NECN are awesome. They are professional, and knowledgeable. They know this business inside and out. They were so inviting when we first visited the studio and I truly felt like they believed in us. After my visit at NECN my confidence was boosted and it really reinforced the fact that I’ve chosen the right career path.
What do you hope to gain from this unique experience?
I’ve already gained so much from this experience and I just started. My hope is that I can retain all of the information, lessons, and guidance I am given. I feel so grateful for the opportunity so I want to make the best out of it.
What are your post graduation plans?
After graduation, I want to pursue my dream of becoming a news reporter. I know it won’t be an easy road but I also know that I’m ready for the challenge.
