HEY SENIORS! It’s the beginning of your last year of college and I’m sure everyone is feeling excited! No more 8 AM classes, all night study sessions, or crazy professors that just always seem out to get you. It’s time to really begin your life and live it how you want! But when you stop and think about it, it may not be that simple. You will be leaving behind the comfort of your college friends and the somewhat carefree lifestyle we live as college students. And then you think, “what am I even supposed to do once I graduate?!” Don’t worry we are here to help!
Though graduation is months away, it is time to get down to business and figure out what needs to be done BEFORE graduation so you aren’t in a complete panic AFTER.
First thing’s first. When you came to college as a little freshman you probably had a million ideas of what new things you wanted to try and what you wanted to accomplish with your time here, and you may not have done all of that. So reflect! Make a list of everything you want to accomplish before you graduate so there are no regrets in the future.
Next, figure out where you see yourself next fall. Do you want to be working across the country? In a different country? Or close to home? You need to figure out where you are willing to go for a job before you can decide where those applications are going.
Now, look at some companies you are interested in working for, see what they expect of new employees, and make sure you meet all of those qualifications. If you don’t, take this year to do whatever it is you need to in order to be considered for that dream job! Whether you need to network more, do another internship, or take certain classes next semester, DO IT.
Finally, it is your resume that needs attention. Read through your resume and make changes again and again, until you are positive it cannot be more perfect. Check spelling, grammar, font, format, and make sure it is only one page. After you have done that, get others that you respect and trust to read it over; whether it be a parent, a teacher, a coworker, or a mentor. Just make sure someone else has seen it before it goes to your possible new boss.
And most of all…make sure you enjoy your last year :)
