Adjusting to College: Stepping Up to the Big Leagues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Susqu chapter.

On my first day at Susquehanna, I was a jumbled up bag of emotions. Happy, excited, nervous, terrified–you name it, I felt it. I met my roommate for the first time and got to know a few girls in my hall. Orientation kept us really busy for the first week, and I started to feel more comfortable as I met more people and gained confidence in my surroundings. As the first day of classes drew closer, my nerves resurfaced and I started to feel unsure about myself.

Flash forward to now, where I am about to start my third week of classes. As I look back on the past two weeks, it feels like I’ve been here a while, but somehow it passed in the blink of an eye. So far, I’ve had a week of captain’s practices for the swim team, gotten to know my professors, pet dogs at dog days, went to the activity fair (where I signed up for Her Campus!), navigated the social scene, and most importantly–got assigned an ample amount of school work.

Coming to college turned out to be a bigger adjustment for me then I realized. As someone who floated through high school academics with relative ease, I didn’t anticipate that I would struggle with some of the content I am learning now. I quickly picked up on the fact that the review sessions with student mentors and asking questions in class would help me succeed academically. Socially, I realized that I have to put myself out there and just start talking to people. Normally that is way outside my comfort zone, which meant that I had to make another big adjustment for myself.

College is a time where everyone is trying to figure themselves out, and some figure it out quicker than others. Personally, I know that I’m still adjusting to all that Susquehanna has to offer. It’s a lot to take in at first, and definitely more challenging than I expected, but there are so many incredible people to meet and opportunities just waiting to be discovered. If there is one thing that can be taken away from this article, this is what I want it to be: you can be anything you want to be and so much more. The world is at your fingertips, and its begging you to take hold.

Hi! I'm Caroline and I go to Susquehanna University in PA. In addition to writing for Her Campus, I am a biomedical studies major and I am a member of the swim team.
