News at SU! Supporting Susquehanna’s Commitment to Serving Others

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Susqu chapter.

Major News on Susquehanna’s Campus! Susquehanna has been fortunate to receive a $7.1 million-dollar grant in support of starting a program called Susquehanna Service Leaders Program. The program will be implemented for incoming students at SU to serve the youth of the Susquehanna Valley with development programs. President Lemons has said that, “The SU Service Leaders Program underscores Susquehanna’s commitment to recruit and support students with a strong community service ethic”. The benefits that come along with being a Service Leader is, “Students will have the opportunity to serve a local community partner, receive $5,000 annually in return for service, and enjoy tremendous leadership training”. This opportunity will begin with the class of 2021 and in four years hopes to grow to 40 members. Incoming freshman are encouraged to apply even if they are not committed to the university. If students do not apply by the specified, they are still welcome to apply after they commit to the university. This program will be yet another way that SU continues to encourage its famous motto of Achieve. Lead. Serve.

SU has a long-time tradition of giving back to the surrounding community. An example of this is SU Serve! This service day is for incoming first-year and transfer students to get into the mindset of service. On this day, students go out into the community and volunteer for a certain number of hours. Afterwards, a reflection is done and students brainstorm ways to continue helping the community. This project is sponsored by The Johnson Center of Civic Engagement.

Another way that SU encourages service is through the Johnson Center of Civic Engagement. The center is in the lower level of Deg. The center is committed to encouraging the students of SU to become involved in community service. They sponsor many projects during the year so if you feel that you want to get involved with community service more, take a trip to lower Deg and start serving!
