Dancing her way to becoming April’s Campus Cutie, meet Shannon Wachtell!
Age: 21
Hometown: Commack, NY
Major(s): Jewelry and Metalsmithing
What are you involved in around campus?
IÂ am a member of SU DanceWorks and have held a position on the board twice. I was also a choreographer for this past year’s show.
How long have you been dancing and what is your favorite type of dance?
I have been dancing since I was 3 years old and started competing when I was 8 years old. My favorite type of dance is definitely Hip Hop.
So, you’re an amazing choreographer for DanceWorks! What types of dance do you teach?
Thank you! This year, I taught a contemporary piece for the DanceWorks show, but I have previously taught Hip Hop, Jazz, and even Pom and Kickline for my high school dance team.
How did you get the position as choreographer? Have you done DanceWorks before this year?
I had always thought about choreographing for DanceWorks, but I always ended up chickening out. This was my third year being in DanceWorks and my second year on the board, and since I am a senior this was my last chance to choreograph. I finally built up the courage to audition with my friend Jillian, and we got it!
Congratulations on an amazing DanceWorks show! Is it a relief that it’s over or are you sad it’s done?
After all the hard work and many hours I’ve put into this organization, it was definitely a relief to be done, but I’ll always miss dancing with everyone in DanceWorks so much.
What’s a fun fact about yourself or a secret talent you have?
Only a few people know this, but I have my own YouTube channel. I post Fashion and Beauty related videos, such as hair and makeup tutorials, fashion look books and DIYS, along with other things. It’s something I’m really passionate about and just enjoy doing for fun. Youtube.com/shannnonsydney – Feel free to check it out!
What is your dream job?
After graduation, I am moving to Los Angeles, CA, and I would love to someday be an actress in Hollywood. Acting has always interested me along with dancing, and to be able to continue to perform, whether it is through acting or dance, would be a dream.
What is your favorite memory at Syracuse so far?
These past four years have been absolutely unreal and there are so many memories I will remember forever, but my all time favorite would have to be freshman year when I got the email telling me I had received a position on the DanceWorks Board for the following year. I had never been so excited to be a part of something and would not be who I am today if it wasn’t for that opportunity.
Last question. If you were a candy, what would you be and why?
Reese’s Cups, 100%. Peanut butter and chocolate are my weaknessess. I can eat an entire bag of them in one sitting, and I have (not my finest hour).
Do you have an Instagram and Twitter so people can follow you?
Yes I do! It’s @shannon_wachtell on Instagram and @shannonwachtell on Twitter!
