If you live anywhere other than the downside of a rock, you saw Lady Gaga’s overwhelmingly empathetic performance of “‘Til It Happens To You” at the Oscars. Now other performers have the chance to support this cause through a competition sponsored by The Hunting Ground Film and the It’s On Us campaign. ‘Til It Happens to You: Sing For Survivors not only raises awareness for survivors of sexual assault, but strives to end the act altogether.
Syracuse University has a strong tie with this cultural revolution. Between Vice President Joe Biden’s speech last fall and our own Samantha Skaller speaking out as the face of the It’s On Us campaign on campus, ‘Cuse is headed in the right direction toward embracing the conversation. In fact, we’re taking it to the next level: speaking to singing.
The Mandarins are participating in the Sing For Survivors competition and need your vote. Currently, they are in second place and strongly deserve the support. To vote, click here:Â http://www.thehuntinggroundfilm.com/contest/the-mandarins/ . Voting ends at noon on Friday, April 1st.
“When [Sam Skaller] asked us to be in the competition, we all jumped at the chance because it’s such a great cause,” said Shannon Bradley, President of the all-women a cappella group. “Watching her go through such a traumatic experience really inspired us to help make a difference.”
Multiple members of The Mandarins know peers and friends affected by sexual assault. Bradleys says they wanted to support their friends in the best way they know how – making beautiful music.
To watch the songbirds take flight, come to The Mandarins: LIVE! Invitational this Friday, April 1st at 8 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel. They will be celebrating their 20th anniversary, a night you won’t want to miss!
