Attention Northerners: What to do when you go home for holidays?

As someone born and raised in Minnesota and attends school in Florida, I want to give you ideas of what you can do while you’re on winter break in the North. Disclaimer: This list is specific to my knowledge but broad enough that you can do these activities in any northern state. Feel free to google these ideas and see what events are happening in your hometown!

  • Ice skating
    • Minnesota is notoriously known as the state of 10,000 lakes; once the lakes freeze over from mid-December to January, it is the perfect time to get out your skates and start blading, whether it be hockey or ice skating.
  • Tubing
    • Almost every Ski Resort will have a portion of the hill designated for tubing; this is a fun activity to go out and do with friends and distract yourself from the cold.
  • Hockey
    • Attending hockey games, whether it is indoors or outdoors, is always fun! Watching hockey can be done almost anywhere in the US; however, in the North, we take it seriously. In Minnesota, if you look to see what hockey games are happening, nine times out of ten, there will be a game happening within 30 minutes of you.
  • Christmas Light Shows
    • Light shows during the holidays are always pretty to see, there are neighborhoods you can drive through at night and watch animations of reindeer, Santa Claus, or snowmen waving from your car. There are also light shows set up by towns, and one big one is in Duluth, MN. Bentleyville has walkways where you walk through light shows, and you can meet Santa Claus, drink hot chocolate, and go on rides at the amusement park; and when it gets late, fireworks start going off over the water.
  • Movies
    • Staying inside for the night or heading to the movie theater is always a necessity. Watching Christmas movies while there is snow on the ground outside and you have the heaters going on inside with fuzzy socks on is a different type of cozy when watching a movie.

Other activities include:

  • Fires
  • Skiing/Snowboarding
  • Ice Fishing
  • Trips to a cabin
  • Sledding
  • Building snowmen

I hope this gets my fellow northerners excited for the winter break!

I am a senior at the University of Tampa – Sykes College of Business. I am majoring in Entrepreneurship. My goal is to go into the world of business with starting off a career in management and/or marketing. I want to have one of my business ideas created or in the works by the time I graduate. Career-wise, I am a server, desk assistant, and a marketing intern right now. My other interests include spending my free time with family/friends by playing sports (mostly tennis, soccer, and volleyball), hammocking with a good book in my hand, taking trips to the beach, and traveling when I get the opportunity to.
