I still remember my first few days walking around the University of Tampa campus as a young freshman excited for my new profound freedom, independence, and the opportunity to grow up away from home. Many of the friends I met in the beginning I still converse and hang out with now. Fast forward four years later and graduation is less than a week away. I have pondered on many of my UT experiences for the past couple of weeks as this chapter is about to close. Several emotions run through my body as well as it is an overwhelming time of excitement, accomplishment, sadness, and hope. Here are the feelings that I have experienced for the past couple weeks and will after graduation.
1. Excitement – There are some aspects of college I am ready to be done with as sometimes it can be agitating to go to school and live with students who may be a few years younger than you. The maturity levels are different, which can lead to frustration and unwanted stress.
2. Anxiousness – Currently, I do not have a plan post-graduation other than going home to Sarasota, FL which is invaded with people over the age of 65+. I will miss the lifestyle of being around my friends constantly and having my freedom of doing what I want when I want. While it will be nice to have home cooked meals and help with laundry, I will miss the hustle and bustle of living on my own for a while.
3. Laziness – After I learned that I passed my portfolio for my major with high marks from professors, I knew then that I could graduate after receiving this fantastic score. This then lead me to be wanting super lazy about mid-April and no want to do any more homework since I knew that I could definitely graduate.
4. Sadness – It is hard saying goodbye to the professors, staff, sisters, and friends that have made my college experience valuable and stimulating. Conversations had and memories made with all of them are well cherished as they will be the parts of college I will always remember. It is hard to let go from what I am comfortable with now, but I know I will make great new connections, relationships, and friendships in the future. Luckily with all the forms of digital communication that exist, I can stay in touch with my UT networks.
5. Successful – I know when I walk across the stage I will feel a sense of pride and accomplishment for everything I completed in my four years at UT such as studying a major and two minors, having a job, being involved in a sorority, and actively participating in several student organizations and dance performances. Every late night, early morning, and busy day were worth every step to reach the diploma and grow as an individual.
Every senior may experience the end of their college journey in a different method depending on the experiences, relationships, and activities they had during that time. Even though I am struggling to let go of it now, I am looking forward to accomplishing my dreams and goals in the future and make a difference. Thank you UT for an amazing four years as you provided me the skills, confidence, and determination I need to go conquer the world!
