Halloween is right around the corner, and what better way to prepare for the upcoming festivities than by watching horror movies? I am someone who loves the horror genre and loves to be scared; I get thoroughly disappointed when a good horror movie does not live up to my standards. So, here are my top three horror movies for this Halloween season.

  1. The Boy (2016)

Where to begin? The Boy is one of the few horror movies I’ve watched where I legitimately was scared to go to sleep afterward. Essentially, a babysitter is hired to watch a doll that moves around when she isn’t looking and doles out “punishments” when she doesn’t follow the rules of the household. The entire movie, you can’t shake the feeling that the doll is not the only peculiar thing about the house. Now, I don’t want to spoil it, but the ending was something I did NOT see coming. I slept with one eye open after watching this movie, but I highly recommend it if you are looking for creepy dolls, plot twists, and the thrill of a good mystery.

  1. Hereditary (2018)

Hereditary is one of those movies that has you thinking about it long after it ends. While I think the movie doesn’t get really “scary” until the very end, the movie definitely messes with your head. Hereditary is very psychological and follows a disturbing set of events that snowball and snowball until they culminate with demonic possessions and crude murders. The sense of panic the main characters feel radiates out of the screen and into anyone watching the events unfold. Now, personally, I would not watch this movie by myself, but I think watching it with friends is a great way to celebrate the spooky season.

  1. Us (2019)

If you’re like me, during horror movies, you sit and think why no one called the police. What I appreciate about the movie Us is the fact that the police were called, and there was a good reason they didn’t respond. During one fateful night, doppelgangers of each and every person hunt down families and attempt to murder them. The movie follows one specific family as they try to escape their doppelgangers and survive to see the next day. Us is another movie that’s more psychological. While there are not a lot of jump scares, I was definitely left feeling unsettled and pondered the movie for some time after I watched it; One of the reasons it made my list and is worth a watch!
