Are you sick? You look kind of tired. “No, I’m just not wearing any makeup.” I think most of us have been asked this question at least once before. This has happened to me twice. The first time, one girl in my class told me how she noticed that I wasn’t wearing mascara today. I was so embarrassed and felt like I had to explain to myself that I was running late and didn’t have any time to put mascara on. The second time, my high school teacher asked me if I was tired today, and I knew he was only asking me that because I didn’t put concealer under my eyes that day like I usually do. Sometimes I wear makeup to class, and sometimes I don’t. Some mornings, I’ll have the energy and time to put on a little makeup before class, and some mornings, when I am overly exhausted, I would much rather sleep in for an extra 15 minutes. Not wearing makeup every day should be normalized. I am a big believer in doing what makes you feel the most confident. If you want to wake up a little bit earlier and put on some concealer and blush, that’s great! But if you would rather sleep in longer and go to class without wearing makeup, that’s great too, and people shouldn’t be judged for it. Stop commenting on how people look if they choose not to wear makeup. We like to wear makeup as a mask to cover up all of our “imperfections.” The truth is makeup is not a necessity, and if you are having one of those days where you don’t want to wear any makeup, you should have every right to do so without any judgment.
