New Jersey’s Senator, Cory Booker, announced the first day of Black History Month that he will be joining the roster running for the presidential race of 2020. Born in the capital of the country, the democratic candidate moved to New Jersey where he was raised and attended high school. Both of his parents were civil rights activists and were among the first black executives at IBM, demonstrating his influence of justice and the black community from a young age. He graduated Stanford University with a BA in Political Science and an MA in Sociology while being in the football team. He later went to the University of Oxford on a scholarship earning an honors degree in United States history along with his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. Booker became a councilman in Newark, New Jersey in 1998 and remained as such until his 2002 mayor run which he lost. Not giving up, Booker ran for a second time in 2006 for mayor and won. As mayor, he significantly reduced the crime rate and his own salary. He later ran for the U.S Senate in New Jersey, winning in 2013.
Similar to Senator Harris, Booker is attempting to win over the black community by announcing his bid the first day of Black History Month, as well as making his candidacy video based on his experience growing up as a black man in New Jersey. He’s not accepting money from corporate PACS or federal lobbyists, rather just donations from the American people. His website, which has a Spanish version, urges you to share your story with him while he shares his with us, demonstrating that his main concern is the people and the community for this upcoming election.
Cory Booker has always proven to care about his community and, if elected, would work as a great President. His opposition is challenging, but knowing about Booker’s previous runs,
he’s not going to give up easily. He’s relatively young, almost reaching his 50s, which could be a plus because it is said that a lot of people want a fresh face and a younger generation on top. His education is also remarkable, perhaps giving him a boost as well. Booker certainly has a promising future in these elections, especially if he wins the black community over Kamala Harris.
