Over spring break, I got the opportunity to see The Color Purple on Broadway at the Straz Center. I have never seen the movie or read the book before. So, I really didn’t know what to expect. However, when the first act ended, I was completely emotional, tear streaming down my face. The closing piece was so beautiful and sad. The main character, Celie was singing “What About Us” with her lover, Shug. Their voices were so perfect together. It was absolutely moving. The second half of the musical was even better. Celie became a strong, confident, and successful woman. It was truly inspiring. There were so many amazing, strong women who defied the odds in this musical. It is a must see for anyone who has heard of the The Color Purple but has never seen it.
