Solo Spring Break: How to Embrace Time Alone

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tampa chapter.

Spring break is typically an opportunity for students to have the ultimate vacation with their friends. Traveling to the Bahamas, partying in Miami, tanning in Clearwater…you name it. Although spring break has a notorious reputation for being a time to socialize, sometimes things do not always align with your friends’ plans. Maybe they are heading home for the week, taking a separate vacation, or maybe you just need some alone time. Spring break can be equally as fun if you are by yourself! Here are a few ways to spend time alone!

  • Learn a new hobby (or perfect a current one)!

When I am spending time alone, I always have the urge to do something creative. Letting your mind run wild without interacting with anyone can be overwhelming and result in boredom. To combat this, I like to use my time productively by learning a fun hobby. I am planning on playing more guitar, improving my drawing skills, and learning how to use more graphic design software! For more inspiration, check out arts and crafts projects on Pinterest or watch YouTube tutorials!

  • Self Reflection

College is overwhelming. With classes, friends, homework, work, clubs, and other activities, it’s hard to find time to be alone. Use this break to check in on yourself. Self-reflection can be as simple as sitting outside with your thoughts. Journaling, yoga, and meditation are also great ways to reflect on your experiences, mental health, and desires. In a world that moves fast, taking time to reflect is extremely beneficial.

  • The Great Outdoors

Go outside! If you are like me and staying in Florida for spring break, make time to go out in nature and take advantage of the warm weather. The beach is always an option; however, if you want to avoid the spring break crowds, try exploring a new park you have never visited before! Pack a book and a picnic if you plan on staying awhile!

  • Try new restaurants

Sometimes, people hate going to restaurants alone. If you are alone during the break, however, use this opportunity to take yourself on a lunch or dinner date. Challenge yourself to go outside of your comfort zone and eat foods you have never tried before! This is not only a perfect solo, but it is also an excuse for a great meal!
