Growing up, the idea of meat never appealed to me. My parents would constantly remind me of my body’s need for protein, forcing me to eat chicken and beef every night for dinner. Not only was the taste of meat unappealing to me, but I also felt a sense of guilt for eating an innocent animal. I had my fair share of vegetarian phases growing up, but it wasn’t until my senior year that I decided to eliminate my meat consumption. Despite most people’s disbelief in the vegetarian lifestyle, I haven’t regretted my dietary changes once.
My switch to a vegetarian diet has allowed me to expand my dietary options. I have been able to explore plant-based proteins, which not only taste much better than meat but also offer the same amount of nutritious value. Being able to explore options such as tofu, quinoa, chickpeas, and edamame, has allowed me to expand my appreciation for healthy foods. Ever since I committed to a vegetarian diet, I haven’t been able to eat at my favorite fast-food restaurants such as Chic-Fil-A or Wendys( due to their lack of vegetarian options on the menu). Ever since cutting out these fast foods from my diet, I have felt morWhy I Stopped Eating Meat Entirelye alive, energized, and fulfilled. Eliminating meat from my diet and exploring plant-based proteins has improved my physical and mental well-being.
Switching to a meatless diet has allowed me to become more environmentally conscious. It’s no surprise that the meat industry has negatively compromised our environment throughout the years. Researchers have concluded that livestock alone accounts for more than 14% of greenhouse emissions. They have also concluded that a widespread vegan/vegetarian diet amongst the population could cut emissions between 63-70%. Although a singular person such as myself switching to a meatless diet may seem impactful, I believe that one small change could lead to others.
My switch to a meat-free diet has been highly beneficial to me. Despite the occasional temptations to munch on some chicken nuggets, this diet has satisfied my needs entirely. I am constantly encouraging my peers and family members to make the switch. Even eliminating just red meat and fish could positively impact the environment. So, I challenge you to consider making the switch. Do it for the environment. Do it for the animals. And lastly, do it for your well-being.
