I will say that for starters I would not consider myself a holiday expressive type of person, but I will never deny a good teen rom-com with relatable characters and diverse casting. Dash & Lily, adapted from the YA book series Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, is a Netflix holiday series about two teenage kids, Dash and Lily. Lily is an optimistic sheltered Christmas enthusiast whose family decides to leave her alone with her brother for the holidays; Dash is a pessimistic self-proclaimed loner who despises the holidays. These two kids could not be any more different, but their love of books and their sense of adventure is what brings them together. This series follows the various dares they send each other on, through one exchanged red notebook, to find clues about who the other is.
This was such a heartwarming show to watch. It wasn’t solely about the meaning of Christmas or “restoring lost Christmas spirit” (I’m looking at you Hallmark), but it was about these two teenagers broadening their horizons and getting out of their comfort zone. It shows that there is no right way of doing, thinking, or being for that matter. It demonstrates that it’s okay to be different because being different is pretty amazing. But one of the most notable aspects of this show that I loved is how these characters are independent for the majority of the series. It is very often you witness, in a rom-com, a person meets another person and their relationship is usually displayed in person or over technology, so this pen-pal with a twist type of relationship Dash and Lily have just seemed very refreshing and fun to me.
So, I just have one question for you, my dear reader.
