6 Reasons Why Everyone Should Experience a Friendsgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TAMU chapter.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and all over the country people are scrambling to meet with family to celebrate. But what if you can’t get home this holiday? Maybe you’re a college student with an insane amount of exams the following week and a trip home is just out of the question. Or perhaps you live miles and miles away from home and a vacation for three days is not possible. What are you to do?

Take a leaf out of Friends’ book and throw a Friendsgiving!

Chances are there are so many other college students stuck in your position who don’t want to spend Thanksgiving alone and would love the company. Put a group together and plan one giant eclectic Friendsgiving filled with tons of food, drinks, and fun!

Here are 6 reasons why you should experience a Friendsgiving:

1. You would get to know friends & classmates more personally.

A good thing about spending Thanksgiving with friends is that you get to know them a bit more personally. It gives you time to learn about what is going on in their lives outside of school. Maybe you’ll find you have more in common than you thought. (And you don’t have to stick them in a box to get the information you want…)

2. Blending of cultures and traditions.

When you get to know your friends more personally, you also start to learn about their families and cultures. Everyone has their traditions they bring to the table, and by gathering altogether, you can experience one giant melting pot Thanksgiving.

3. You never know what you’re going to get.

One of the best parts of Friendsgiving is the potluck! Each person is responsible for bringing one item to feed the masses and that means you never know what you’re going to get. Let’s just hope we don’t get one of Rachel’s meat trifles!

4. New traditions are born.

Friendsgiving is not your regular Thanksgiving so there’s no need to keep with formalities. You don’t need nice china and fancy food to have a good time. Instead, you can start your own traditions. Why don’t you stay in your pj’s all day? Or watch holiday movies on the couch. Or start a football game with the group.  The possibilities are endless!

5. The stories last forever.

With such a diverse group of people gathering together, you are sure to have stories to tell for a lifetime. Like when “Mandy” dropped that bottle of wine. Or when “Jerry” got sick from eating too much. Just don’t pull a Monica and Joey and get your head stuck in the turkey; you’ll never live that down!

6. You aren’t alone.

The most important reason to celebrate with a Friendsgiving: you are not alone at a time that is made for family and friends. Enjoy this time and be thankful for the people in your life.

Happy Thanksgiving!
