Unlike other students here at Texas A&M, I’m one of the few students who doesn’t partake in any of the Aggie Traditions here on campus. I’m what Redass Aggies call a 2 Percenter: “A student at Texas A&M University who does not participate in traditions or participates only to a certain point” (Urban Dictionary). Contrary to popular belief, it’s not that I’m unable to participate in these activities, it’s the simple fact of not wanting to. Standing 4 plus hours in the blazing sun surrounded by aggressive drunks on a Saturday does not appeal to me, chanting yells is out of my comfort zone, and chugging 4 beers out of a pitcher celebrating the completion of 90 hours does not sound fun. I’m a current senior who has attended football games and seen my friends complete their ring dunk. But I can’t fathom the reasons for wanting to do any of this. However, I will say I enjoy watching them experience these things. I prefer going to events hosted by one of the three clubs I’m a part of on campus or quiet nights in. Just because these traditions aren’t my definition of fun, doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy my friends or other Aggies enjoying these traditions. I’ve come to realize that I like living through other Aggies and enjoying the traditions A&M has to offer. I’ll just watch happily from the sidelines.Â
