There’s nothing better than that new feeling that comes from seasonal wardrobe transitions. With the fresh promise of spring, I can’t wait to break out my linens and sandals. If you’re eager for spring like I am, you’ve also realized that the presence of sun doesn’t always negate a nippy climate. Luckily, a lighter jacket will fend off an unwanted chill and instantly add dimension to your spring looks.

Why not try out a denim jacket? Keep it classic or add patchwork, frayed cuffs, embroidery, or embellishments. (I painted the back of my own jacket to personalize it.) They’re Americana, grunge, punk, bohemian: it’s a fashion chameleon’s dream come true.  Here are five easy ways to incorporate a denim jacket as one of your spring staples:

  1. City Blues

Going to the city for a day? Try pairing a denim jacket with a fitted printed skirt. The denim jacket, casual but chic, will balance any print. Elevate your look with a sleek shoe or go edgy with a chunky sneaker. Add sunglasses and you’ll look every part the Insta-influencer your outfit says you are.

  2. 90s Nova

Channel your inner 90s screen queen and wear a slip dress under a denim jacket. Combat boots will toughen up this outfit—perfect for concerts, romps, and any late-night revels. Don’t forget to pack an attitude with this bad-babe vibe.

  3. Double Denim Daydream

Have a Canadian tuxedo moment! This works especially well when you’re wearing two different washes. Be a total dad and pair it with a baseball cap. If you’re feeling fancy (it is a moment, after all), polish the tux with feminine flats.

  4. Wonderland

Spring also means end-of-the-year club parties, banquets, and semi-formals. Consider using a denim jacket as your shawl for the night.

  5. Blue Moon

In need of a date ensemble? Nothing says springtime like a trusty cropped pant. With a fun pair of espadrilles, this outfit will take you from brunch to a romantic April evening.
