Erik Marcus never has Wednesdays off. The senior accounting major has been a part of the College Union Board (CUB), TCNJ’s event programming group, executive board since the first week of his freshman year.
Now Director of the major campus group, this ambitious Campus Celeb has blocked off a solid three hours (at minimum) each Wednesday for CUB all four years, and wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Looking back now as Director, I would never have seen myself in this position, especially when I first joined,” he says. “You’re given such responsibility to do something for the majority of campus and then to see your idea come to life – it’s a really rewarding experience.”
Marcus was elected as an Event Coordinator and then went on to Travel Chair, Finance Director and Director. He planned major events like the Spring 2013 Concert with Mac Miller and Big Sean with GrooveBoston, the Fall 2012 Concert with Jack’s Mannequin and opener Secondhand Seranade, and the overnight Boston trip, among many others.
“My proudest event is the spring concert last year because there was so much that went into it,” he says. “Looking back from a big picture and then seeing it almost sell out – and people really enjoyed themselves.”
While Marcus was initially attracted to CUB for its music aspect, he ended up loving so much more about it – especially travel. “By taking on the Travel Chair role, I got to go out and see different things. I had a really great connection with my small board, and I went to places I would never have gone if it weren’t for the bus trips.”
Now, Marcus wants to impact others the way CUB has impacted him. His goal is to retain members, as the heaviest involvement occurs in the beginning of the semester and often dies down as the semester goes on (a problem most campus clubs face). He is also pushing creativity in the live sector of CUB, encouraging the e-board to think outside the box to bring an event that has never been done before.
This Celeb’s successes are not just limited to CUB either. Marcus already has a job lined up post-graduation at KPMG.
Plus, he’s a smarty. He is one of a select few in Phi Kappa Phi on top of his involvement in business honors societies Beta Alpha Psi (for accounting and finance), Beta Gamma Sigma (for business students) and the Institute of Management Accountants Student Chapter.
It looks like Marcus hasn’t really been missing out on Wednesdays off anyway. This Celeb is on the fast track to success!
