On Wednesday, April 8 TCNJ had the delight of welcoming Ice T to campus! He is best known for his role on Law and Order SVU, and he gave a wonderfully inspirational speech to the student body which he titled: “How a career prisoner [me] ended up playing a police officer on TV for 17 years.” Here are the top nine takeaways and tips from his lecture:
1. Give everybody a chance.
2. You are going on your own journey. Don’t let other people into your business because not everyone really cares.
3. Don’t let people make you feel inadequate about your successes.
4. Concentrate on being the best you can be.
5. As long as you have outdone what you originally set out to complete, you have succeeded. You don’t need to be number one.
6. Be dedicated – keep a promise to yourself.
7. Focus – don’t pay attention to anything around you.
8. Be passionate – do something in life that you love doing.
9. The key to “cool” is: when you win you don’t get too happy and when you lose you don’t get too sad.
