Having good makeup hygiene will allow you to feel better about what you are putting on your face. It can also lead to cleaner skin and less breakouts. Here are some quick tips and tricks to help practice makeup hygiene all the time:
- Clean your brushes
According to an article from the American Academy of Dermatology, you should be washing your makeup brushes every 7 to 10 days! Most people (like me) think that every couple of months is enough. If you frequently use your brushes, clean them once a week to help protect your skin from breakouts and kill bacteria on the bristles.
- Wash your hands
This should go without saying but having clean hands when you are going to be touching your face is extremely important.
- Start with a clean face
Applying makeup to a clean face is ideal. If you pile makeup on top of old makeup it could lead to breakouts. Starting with a clean moisturized face is best.
- Replace your mascara (And all eye makeup basically)
You should be replacing your mascara every three months because bacteria builds up quickly on the wand of the product. Other eye products, like eyeliner, should also be replaced every three months.
- Replace your other product too
It can be hard to let go of products that you’ve spent your hard-earned money on but other products such as foundation, concealer, and blush should ideally be replaced once a year.
