Although a typical Sunday night at TCNJ usually doesn’t include chiffon gowns and polished up-dos, I couldn’t help but admire the stars on the Oscars Red Carpet last night at the 85th annual Academy Awards while I indulged in potato chips and relaxed comfortably in TCNJ sweats. If homework, tests or essays kept you collegiettes from watching last night, here’s a recap of the top five best dressed winners (in no particular order!).
1. Jennifer Lawrence, Best Actress in a Leading Role
Although the Silver Linings Playbook actress took a tumble on her way up to accept her trophy, she did so elegantly considering the length of her bridal-esque Dior gown. The starlet carried herself confidently and was able to pull off a dramatic yet gorgeous look. When asked what happened during her fall, she simply replied, “Look at this dress,” according to EOnline.
2. Daniel Day-Lewis, Best Actor in a Leading Role
Winning the title for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in the Steven Spielberg film Lincoln, Day-Lewis broke an Oscars record by becoming the first man to receive three Best Actor trophies, proving just how timeless this Brit really is. Looking crisp and professional in his Domenico Vacca tailored suit, he appeared spellbound while accepting the award. “I really don’t know how any of this happened. I do know that I have received more than my share of good fortune,” he said, according to Huffington Post.
3. Anne Hathaway, Best Actress in a Supporting Role
Coming a long way from her Princess Diaries days, this brunette bombshell won the title for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables, the movie that won three awards total. Resembling Audrey Hepburn and pairing her neat pixie cut with a light pink, backless Prada gown, she brought beautiful to a new level. Although some may argue that it was a bit too see-through, Hathaway’s dress balanced sexy and sophisticated. She attributed many people to her success in her acceptance speech, saying “There are so many people whose generosity and support is the reason I’m standing here right now,” according to The Independent.
4. Ben Affleck, Accepting Award for Argo, Best Picture
After directing the film, he didn’t exactly win in the Best Directing category, but this hunk accepted the award on the movie’s behalf donning a Gucci suit and bowtie. This piece of eyecandy looked tall, dark and handsome as always. He and his wife, Jennifer Garner, must have gone shopping together, because she accompanied him wearing a plum Gucci gown. Referring to his 1997 original screenplay win for Good Will Hunting, he said, “I was here 15 years ago and I had no idea what I was doing…I never thought I’d be back here,” according to Today Entertainment.
5. Adele, Best Original Song “Skyfall”
Performing this James Bond-themed song at the award show, it was the first time Adele returned to the stage since the birth of her son Angelo last fall. Dressed conservatively in an embellished Jenny Packham gown, her amazing voice justified her win later in the night. Mentioning many in her acceptance speech, such as Sony Pictures, MGM, Paul Epworth and her husband Simon Konecki according to The Independent, Adele proved that she is more than just a pretty voice.
