My Top 3 songs on Summer Walker’s “Still Over It”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCU chapter.

Summer Walker topped charts for weeks after her album “Still Over It” came out in November. In fact, all 18 of her eligible tracks landed on Billboard’s top 100. Being obsessed with R&B music, I was absolutely obsessed with every song on her album for months, and when I found out she was coming to Irving, I jumped at the chance to buy tickets. Now that the concert is coming up, I’m re-listening every one of her songs, which inspired me to rank my top three favorite songs off her new album.

1. “You don’t know me”

Of course, in all of her songs, Summer Walker pours out her heart through her vocals. However, “You Don’t Know Me” has power on a whole different level than her other songs about heartbreak. Whereas most of her songs have a more jealous/angry passion to them, “You Don’t Know Me” seems more as a cry of pain as she realizes that her s/o doesn’t in fact know her as much as she wishes he did. Her opening lines are my favorite, where she’s expressing the love that’s fallen off between her and her partner, London. She sings, “We’re lost in translation/I’m honestly running out of patience/Communication just don’t seem to work”. Her melodic guitar background mixed with her passionate lyrics make it my top song by far.

2. “bitter” ft. cardi b

The essence of “Bitter” comes in its very own title. Through the lyrics, Summer Walker looks to show her listeners how upset she is over her significant other cheating on her. She goes over again and again how he continued to go to other women for love and attention instead of her, claiming that he put himself above her. Her powerful lyrics hit the hardest when she calls him out by name saying “London did you screw her for real?” Throughout the song you can hear how angry she is at him. From this song, it seems as though she will never take him back. Honestly, my favorite part of this song is Cardi B’s ending, where she calls Summer to reassure her through hard times. In her words and tone, she gives Summer an uplifting message to stay the powerful, confident woman she is, in turn giving it to all Summer’s listeners as well.

“No Love”

However, the beginning of one of her top hits sends a very different message. In “No Love”, she starts the song explaining that if she had him back, she would have done everything right so that he would have stayed with her. It almost seems as though she is blaming herself for her partner cheating. However, she quickly moves on and sings, “There would be no loving” if they truly did get back together. Her TikTok famous line “All I’m tryna see is your credit card/swipe it all for me/get me what I want/I don’t need you, just CC me, just VV me” oozes confidence, making it one of my top three favorites.
