Ah, game week. I can almost smell that 12:00p.m. tailgate and hear the screaming girls on the subway in matching cheerleading skirts. I can almost see the Instagram posts… because nothing says college pride like cut-up tees (I’m not making fun of this. I’m just as guilty as everyone else who has paid for a whole shirt only to dismember half of it with scissors) or guys with red Ts painted onto their stomachs.
Take all that and amplify it by about 10. It’s not just game week. It’s homecoming week.
There are a lot of things to get you ready for the chaotic-goodness of homecoming, like concerts, spirit events, and free stuff. And sure, all colleges have homecoming week. But these five aspects of homecoming week at Temple University are unique to only us.
Although the game may start far earlier than we’d want to wake up on Saturday—ahem, three o’clock kick-offs where are you? – Greatness doesn’t quit.
1. The bookstore lines are insane
Because where else are you going to buy a shirt to cut in half? If you’re not buying game-attire, stay far away. That is, unless you’re trying to stand in line with the entire student body purchasing buy-one-get-ones on Champion anything.
2. Being weird isn’t weird
Because you can do just about any ridiculous thing you want and justify your actions by saying it’s for purely for the spirit of homecoming week.
3. Your group chats consist of…
Are we going to Andrea’s apartment for the pre-game? Can I borrow your red matte lipstick? Who’s making the buff chick dip? What team are we playing again?
4. Your friends from neighboring schools are in town for the game.
La Salle University football isn’t a thing—duh. And we wish Penn State football wasn’t as well. But, as long as your visitors are sporting cherry and red, you’ll welcome anyone to the game.
5. You realize that you could probably make it on time to your 8:00 AM everyday if the whole school was cheering you on.
It’s game day. You immediately think to yourself – it’s too early. God. It’s so early. Someone get me some Bagel Hut.
With that being said: Pull on that shirt –or what’s left of it – Happy homecoming, Go Owls!
