What comes to mind when I say orange? For me, it’s turmeric.

As a child, my mother concocted dishes vibrant in color, ranging from various types of curries or daal. A key ingredient the dishes had in common was turmeric, a widely used household spice among South Asians. It’s an ingredient that is necessary in any spice cabinet.

Once the orange-like powder hit the pan, the vegetables sizzled in full glory. It was like they were taking in each particle of turmeric, wearing a coat of flavor.

It always amazed me how a simple ingredient can turn a boring dish of vegetables into a savory, delicious meal. The aroma of South Asian cuisine engulfed my kitchen each time my mom used it, pointing to my familial roots.

Although I’ve felt distant with my culture, the smell of turmeric helps me feel proud of my roots again.

One day, while looking at the immense amount of turmeric in my cabinet with a renewed sense of adoration, I realized there must be other ways I can utilize the orange powder.

A sudden interest piqued, and I began to type away on my keyboard with my short, clumsy fingertips.

Here’s what I found:

  1. Create a DIY turmeric face mask
  1. Brew tea with turmeric
  1. Mix cocktails with turmeric

I was not surprised to say in the least with my search results because I knew that it has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Turmeric is also rich in phytonutrients that may protect the body from neutralizing free radicals such as pollution and sunlight, according to John Hopkins Medicine.

Since starting my online exploration, I’ve tried two of three search results: facemasks and cocktails.

First, I made a turmeric DIY mask with the following everyday ingredients: turmeric, honey, lemon juice, and yogurt.  My mother laughed as I walked around the house with a golden face full of yogurt.

Would I try the DIY turmeric mask again? Yes, but it would not be my first choice.

As for my second attempt, I recently tried a turmeric flavored cocktail at an herbal cocktail lounge. As a health fanatic, I definitely had to give it a shot. With one sip of the turmeric cocktail, my mind exploded in a frenzy.

It hit the spot! I felt a kick of alcohol, but also an earthy bitterness of the turmeric. It was a pleasant bitterness with a bit of satisfaction due to its health benefits.

With this drink and face mask, a simple orange hue from my culture made me feel closer to my South Asian roots. Rather than feeling comfortable, I was excited for this emerging orange powder in my life and the bright future it holds.
