Avoiding Dejection this Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

I’ve always been single on Valentine’s Day. This bothers me as much on Valentine’s Day as much as the other 364 days, knowing I’m void of personal references when singing a love song. Sometimes I care, sometimes I don’t. I don’t let the media hype mislead me into thinking that there is something wrong with me because I won’t be gifted with chocolate, flowers and a four-star restaurant.

Not all single women feel dysfunctional on Valentine’s Day, but the following list is for those that do. If the everywhereness of pink and red hearts, Valentine’s Day-themed advertisements, and V-Day events has started to mess with the comfort you once felt with solitude, then remind yourself to do the following:

If you saw these Valentine’s Day symbols everywhere, would they incite wistful longings to have a significant other? You’d be more likely to have an adverse reaction if these were used to represent Valentine’s Day. Actual human hearts aren’t really aesthetically pleasing.

Don’t develop an embittered attitude towards retailers on Valentine’s Day. They are retailers so they’re supposed to take advantage of every holiday. If you see a cute, pink freakum dress (which will probably be on sale in the name of V-Day) that you like, then buy it. If for no other reason, cherish Valentine’s Day because it just afforded you 30 percent off.

Relationships aren’t always all they’re cracked up to be. They can often cause drama, unrest and distraction from school. If you’re not swayed by seeing couples sitting in tense silence over dinner or arguing while walking down the street, watch a romantic movie to see the extent of dysfunction relationships can have. Be fortunate you’re single and you can celebrate a holiday free of any commotion. Family holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas are for all of that fun stuff.

If you’re still feeling a slight sense of dejection, remember the proverb, “This too shall pass.” It’s natural for humans to want to be loved and while you may be single now, the probability that you won’t remain this way is immense.

Valentine’s Day is held on a Friday this year, so there’s no reason not to stop by the holiday-themed “singles’” events that are taking place in the city. If you’re under 21, there will likely be campus events or house parties in the name of V-Day.

Step outside of yourself. Often times college kids get so caught up in their own lives that we neglect the world that extends beyond campus. Vagina Monologues creator Eve Ensler has given V-Day a more meaningful connotation by starting the “V-Day” organization, which works to prevent violence against women. On February 14, Ensler encourages people to take part in “One Billion Rising.” Participators protest through dance outside of places that are supposed to represent enforcement of justice, such as police stations, courthouses and other government buildings.
