Give yourself an at home facial massage with these affordable and sustainable beauty tools

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

SACHEU BEAUTY’s twist on popular ancient Chinese skin care tools are antibacterial, eco-friendly, and unbreakable additions that will revolutionize your beauty routine.

If you follow beauty trends on the ‘gram or tik-tok, you’ve probably noticed every other skin-care influencer either using a crystal Gua Sha or facial roller. If you don’t Gua-Sha or facial roll, you should certainly jump on board ASAP because this is no fleeting trend—your skin will thank you for it. But not all facial tools are created equally! Here’s why celebs and influencers— including the Kardashian’s–can’t get enough of SACHEU BEAUTY’s stainless-steel tools.

As a licensed esthetician, I have several clients who book facials with me specifically to benefit from the massage portion of the treatment. Asian beauty rituals and facial techniques have always inspired my unique massage approach– they are heavily focused on lymphatic drainage and targeted pressure points to relieve stress and accumulated tension and promote blood flow and circulation for glowing skin. Plus, Eastern focused facial massage is safe for all skin types, whereas European facial massage techniques can be aggravating for acne-prone or sensitive skin. For my clients with legitimate pain from issues like TMJ, congestion, or sinus headaches and migraines, recommending at-home massage techniques in between appointments is tricky– but the rising popularity of tools like the Gua Sha and facial roller has made my home care recommendations much easier.

Although many westerners may be new to discovering these tools, they have been staples in Asian beauty routines for centuries. Typically made of jade or rose quartz, the Gua Sha and facial roller have become extremely popular in western Beauty routines thanks to beauty influencers and skin care aficionados on social media. The tools boast several legitimate benefits, including depuffing, lymphatic drainage, increased product absorption, and congestion relief.

But crystal facial tools–despite their beauty– have a few serious flaws; they are extremely porous, which makes them more susceptible to harboring bacteria and harder to clean. Additionally, mining these non-renewable resources can be extremely harmful to the environment. Plus, these natural minerals tend to be extremely fragile and prone to shattering or chipping, making the tools hard to maintain long-term without needing to repurchase.

That is where SACHEU comes in. Founded by influencer Sarah Cheung, the brand’s offerings are inspired by the youth-promoting rituals she learned from her grandmother in Hong Kong. SACHEU tools are made of 100% stainless steel. Not only does that make them antibacterial and easy to clean, but they are also shatter-proof, self-cooling, and made from completely recyclable materials. Even SACHEU’s packaging is environmentally friendly and FSC certified. If you are still not completely convinced that you need to jump in and snag one of SACHEU’s ethically sourced line of antibacterial beauty tools, you might also be intrigued to know that a portion of the brand’s profits goes towards Futures Without Violence, a non-profit organization aimed at empowering and protecting victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse

A minority, woman-owned business that cares about giving back, empowering women and sustainability has me totally fan-girling in support—but in all seriousness these tools are amazing and completely worth the small investment. Trust me, they will change your skin for the better.

If you’re new to facial massage tools and are not sure where to start, many find the facial roller an easy first addition. The roller can be used for about 2 minutes daily after cleansing, and/or applying toner and serum. It will depuff and rejuvenate the skin while helping to massage products deeper into skin for maximum absorption. SACHEU’s facial roller will instantly eliminate those up-all-night eye bags, whether they came from pulling a study-sesh at the library or a late girl’s night out.

The Gua Sha is my go-to recommendation for those with tension headaches, jaw pain, or those looking for a more sculpted profile— it’s like a workout for your face! The tool is meant to be used three times a week, with a serum that has a lot of glide—try it with the Thick Skin serum. In a scraping motion swipe the tool from the center of the face outwards. Make sure to focus on areas of tensions, such as the jaw or brow area, and your natural contours—like the cheekbones. With use overtime, you will notice a sharper contour and lifted skin.

Conclusion: Whichever tool you pick, be prepared to fall in love. You will notice instant and long term benefits with continued use. Personally, I couldn’t decide between the two—so I invested in both! The roller is a staple in my daily routine and the Gua Sha is a go-to for my tri-weekly deeper facial massage—and has been especially useful for me during periods of high stress, like midterms or finals weeks. You can grab a set with them both and the thick skin serum at a bundled rate.
