Netflix’s audience can expect the replacement of multiple titles and the debut of a few original television shows. Toward the end of February, under the direction behind The End of the F***ing World and the production behind Stranger Things, the streaming service will be releasing the awkward coming-of-age original series: I Am Not Okay with This.
The teen-drama is based on the graphic novel by Charles Forsman with the same name. Forsman has already proven himself to be a credible name on Netflix, what with being the writer of the successful book and television series: The End of the F***ing World.
I Am Not Okay with This follows a fifteen-year-old girl, named Sydney, as she undergoes the pleasures and afflictions of high school. Although she faces relatable struggles, such as grief and the complications of figuring out her sexuality, Sydney is also tasked with the obstacle of trying to predict and control her budding telekinetic powers.
While Netflix has yet to release a trailer, several images have sprouted and given fans and potential viewers a look at the prominent 70s and 80s aesthetic that has made an appearance in some of the creators’ past works.
Starring as Sydney is none other than Sophia Lillis, who played Beverly in It and Gretel in Gretel and Hansel. Also in the cast is her It costar, Wyatt Oleff, who coincidentally is playing another character named Stanley, and Sofia Bryant, who is well known for her role in The Good Wife, and will be playing Dina throughout the series. As the fourth kid lead, there is Richard Ellis who plays Brad and can be recognized from his role in the Veronica Mars reboot.
The show began filming in the summer of 2019 in multiple locations around Pennsylvania, so it’s possible that many Temple students will recognize some of the show’s locations. The show was announced on June 10th, when the four leads each announced the series on their respective Instagrams. Since then, the show has continued to gain attention and anticipation from Netflix watchers.
If you are a fan of The End of the F***ing World, Stranger Things, or just coming-of-age stories in general, make sure to check out this original series on Netflix on February 26.
