The long awaited football rivalry has arrived once again: Temple vs. Penn State. On September 7, 2015, this same rivalry took place at Lincoln Financial Field. It was the first game of the season for the Owls, and there were high hopes shielding any doubt as to if we could beat the Nittany Lions. The game started in favor of the Nittany Lions. It wasn’t until the third quarter until the Owls tied the game and eventually won the game. The final score was 27-10, and the Owls had beat Penn State for the first time October 18, 1941, a victory that was 74 years in the making.
On Saturday, September 17, 2016, Temple will be going up agaist Penn State once again, this time at Beaver Stadium, in State College, Pennsylvania. Beaver Stadium holds a total of 106,572 fans and is the second largest stadium in the United States. To compare, the Linc holds about 69,100 fans. This will allow for Penn State to have a home field advantage. There are many mixed feelings from Temple students regarding the outcome of the game. Some believe in a positive outcome, while others are not as hopeful.
Some students will be heading to State College to attend the game, such as junior Andrew DeVito. He says, “I’m going to the game. I think it will be close but Penn State will win, home field advantage being key.”
Other students have decided not to attend the game, such as Justin Petlakh, a freshman. Petlakh says, “I’d love to go to Penn State and watch it because I have friends from high school that go there and I’d have a place to sleep. But I feel it would be awkward to be there as a Temple student with Penn State friends, so I’m just gonna sit back and chill and go to the parties when we win.” Temple will certainly be ~lit~ if the Owls beat Penn State again.
Sophomore Sarah Madaus doesn’t want to battle the crowd at Beaver Stadium. She says, “I feel like no matter the outcome, it’s going to be a good game. I’m terrified of drunken and intense Nittany Lions, so I’m watching the game on TV with my dad and a huge pile of buffalo wings.”
There’s an intense rivalry that has developed between the two teams, especially for students who have friends or family connected to Penn State. Christina, a freshman, says, “My twin brother goes to Penn State, so my house is a little divided this weekend.”
Freshman Graham Foley is also experiencing a rivalry in his family this weekend. “I’m going with my dad; he’s a Penn State fan. I was a PSU fan, converted. It’s going to be strange rooting against them but Temple definitely has a shot and it will be fun.”
Some students don’t have any interest in the game, such as Ellyse Bendillo, a junior. Bendillo says, “If it wasn’t for all this mess about building a stadium, I’d probably forget we had a football team.” Mitchell Berven-Stotz, a freshman, does not have much interest in sports either: “I don’t really follow sports, but I did wear a Pitt shirt on Saturday to spite Penn State.” Yes. We love that. No matter if you follow sports or not, the only important information you need to know is the result of tomorrow’s game.

No matter the outcome, wear your Cherry and White with pride (even if you’re just sitting on your couch) and show the world that you’re Temple made and Temple proud. Let’s go Owls!
