Relationships? Nah. 5 Reasons why it is better to be Single

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

While some of us yearn for the Lily and Marshall, Serena and Dan, Corey and Topanga, or even the Whitley and Dwayne college relationship, it’s common to be single in college. I remember watching all these scripted romances and dreaming of the day I’d meet my college sweetheart in a library as we both exchange glances at each other or even while on Liacouras Walk. So far that hasn’t happened except a few glances from creepy guys. Don’t spend your nights wishing you were in a relationship as wonderful college experiences pass you by. Some girls end up in great relationships while in college, but I’m going to give you five wonderful reasons why it’s better to be single.

1. Fall in love yourself

Don’t read this and think I’m telling you to go be that conceded person who stops to look in every mirror and constantly talks about themselves.  The great Carrie Bradshaw (whom I love) once said, “Don’t forget to fall in love with yourself first.” In college you should take the time out to love who you are before you jump in a relationship and love someone else. It’s true that you can’t fully love someone else without having a little bit more love for yourself.

2. Be selfish

These are the only four years you get to be worry free. Though we worry about classes and other college issues, being single means you don’t have to worry about the person you’re in a relationship with. You should be a little selfish in college. By selfish I mean that you should be able party whenever you want, go to club meetings or even pig out at a restaurant without having to consider the person you’re in a relationship with in your daily decisions.

3. Build friendships

Have you ever been ditched by a friend once her Facebook status went from “single” to “in a relationship”? If so, I know the feeling because I’m going through the same situation now with a friend. Sometimes being in a relationship means you miss out on some of the best nights in college. People who constantly hang around their BF’s don’t get the opportunity to build friendships with others. Don’t even try to lie; we have all at one time been so consumed with our relationships that we forgot about our friendships. You’ll meet so many people if you’re single and not thinking about a significant other.

4. Say no to jealousy

Whether you want to admit it or not we all get jealous every now and then. Sometimes that jealousy heightens when you’re in a relationship. No one wants to be the jealous girlfriend when your guy decides to hang out with other girls or even his friends. Being single means you’re not constantly worried about what the other person is doing or who they are doing it with. Say no to jealousy and enjoy being a young single gal in college.

5. Get your flirt on

Being in a relationship has its perks. There is someone for you to talk to. It’s intense and can be very fulfilling. But being single has its perks too! Remember when you went to an ice cream shop as a kid and you wanted to try everything. Well in college there are so many varieties of ice cream to try: cookies n’ cream, chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, and the list goes on. If you’re single you can explore all the options your college campus has to offer. Some people in relationships still flirt with other people but that can lead to an argument or a break-up.

Next time you go out get your flirt on and try out some of the ice cream.

Yes, some people do meet the Corey to their Topanga in college. If you’re not in a relationship don’t worry, your time for love will come. Make sure you fall in love with yourself before jumping into a relationship. It’s perfectly alright to be selfish with your time because it’s precious. Being single means you don’t have someone else to constantly worry about. People say college is the best four years of your life. You’ll never get it back. Don’t get caught up in the obsession to be in a relationship. Go out there make friendships that will last even after college. Next time you go out don’t forget to get your flirt on.
