Spring Cleaning, But For Your Skin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Spring is one of my favorite seasons because everything comes back to life. Flowers start to bloom, the air feels welcoming, and everyone is out and about after binge-watching Shameless all winter. Spring means it’s time for a fresh start and it’s the best time to get rid of everything you don’t use anymore or are bored of! But spring cleaning isn’t just for getting rid of sweaters you haven’t worn all winter or dusting every inch of your apartment. It’s a great time to freshen up your skincare routine too! I’m sure your skin is feeling dry and tired after a long winter (I know mine is) so here are some tips to have your skin looking radiant just in time for spring break!

First things first, EXFOLIATE! This is my favorite part of skincare simply because it feels so good to get rid of all the icky stuff hanging out in your pores. A great all-natural way to exfoliate is by using sugar scrubs! I make mine homemade with sugar, olive oil, and essential oils like peppermint and lavender. They smell amazing and don’t leave your skin covered with preservatives and chemicals. Just be sure to rub them on your skin in a gentle circular motion so you aren’t too harsh on your skin!

Another really important thing is using a toner. Toners are great because they get so much done at once: they get rid of any excess residue on your skin, improves texture, and also refreshes your face. Need I say anymore? I definitely suggest investing in a good toner. I use Botanical Effects Toner by Mary Kay and love it, but MAC’s Mineralize Charged Water always gets hype too.

Another Holy Grail product is a light moisturizer. After months of dry skin and layering on thick, heavy lotion, a lightweight moisturizer is a must have! It will soften and hydrate your skin without leaving a heavy impenetrable layer on your face. Elf moisturizer is a great option especially because it’s so affordable. Aveeno and Clinique are great natural brands that use more activating ingredients to soothe your skin.

Finally, be on the lookout for products with SPF. The sun is a little more aggressive in the spring and summer, and might catch your skin off guard on that first 70 degree day of spring. Don’t hesitate to even use a light sunscreen underneath your foundation to add another layer of protection. Safety first! Sunburn is never in style.

Make sure you take the time to take care of your skin this spring so you can look as great as you feel!
