Summer 2023 Essentials from a Jersey Shore Veteran

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

As a girl who lives on the Jersey Shore during the summer, over the years I’ve learned what you really need to survive the hottest season.

With the summer season quickly approaching, now would be the perfect time to start gathering all the essentials you need for this summer season. Whether you plan on traveling, taking a beach trip or even staying in your hometown, it’s still important to have certain items so that you’re able to be prepared. After countless beach trips, I now have a perfect list of everything you need for the season.

One of the most important things to do is take care of your skin. It does not matter if it’s summer or winter, investing in a good sunscreen is a must. As somebody who has dry and sensitive skin, the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen  is the best and most effective sunscreen I’ve tried. Alongside that I use Banana Boat Sunscreen for my body.

Another product I use daily in the summer is a leave-in conditioner. After swimming in salt water or chlorine, my hair becomes very dry. So, using this after getting out of the water has made a huge impact. OUAI has a Leave in Conditioner that is very affective, which makes it worth purchasing despite its higher price point.

One of the best things about spring and summer is being able to dress for warmer weather. Wearing shorts, skirts and dresses is much more comfortable and fun than bulking up before leaving the house. My 2 favorite ways to add to an outfit are by accessories and a tote bag. I find it more fun to accessorize for the warmer season with hair scarves and sunglasses.

I will admit, I do lose and break my sunglasses often, so I order cheap ones off Amazon and Shein. But there are so many stores that sell affordable, cute sunglasses such as Aerie, Target and American Eagle. As for hair scarves I have gotten some from Cotton On, and Princess Polly. I really like tying my hair up with these and wearing them as a headband.

Now, let’s get into tote bags! They can be used in multiple ways, such as a beach/pool bag or going out with your friends. You can find so many personalized ones that can cater to you or your interests. If you look on Etsy, there are so many different styles and colors, and you would also be supporting somebody’s small business which is a plus. Aside from Etsy I have also bought mesh tote bags to use as a beach bag from Amazon and I got the totes I use every day from Cotton On.

The one thing that I think everybody truly needs is a durable, flattering bathing suit. I splurged on a bikini from Triangl two years ago, and it still looks brand new. In my opinion, I don’t see a purpose in buying ten cheap bikinis from Shein or Zaful every year, when you can buy a high quality one that will last. Not only is the material thick but it also doesn’t fade after being in the sun for so long and I don’t need to constantly readjust it when I’m in the water.

“Boujee” bikini sites, such as Triangl, Kulani’s Kinis, and Black Bough have so many different styles, cut, coverage levels that it does cater towards such a large audience. There are also so many colors, and fun patterns and it is guaranteed that you can find something that’s cute, stands out, and flatters you.

As the weather starts to get warmer, it makes me more excited for the summer season. Living at the beach has taught me a lot about what I need to survive, and I hope my knowledge and my preferences can help everybody else this summer.

Hi! My name is Katie and I am the TikTok Coordinator for the Temple University Chapter! I had started off as a staff writer for the fashion and beauty section, and then after a year of writing I had become the Tik Tok Coordinator. I am a senior at Temple University who is studying Journalism and Digital Media Engagement. Throughout my entire school career I had always loved writing, and thought that Journalism would be the perfect fit for me! With writing for Her Campus as well as Refine Magazine, it is safe to say that magazine writing is something I can see myself doing long term. Moreover with my love for photography and content creation, running the Her Campus Tik Tok is a perfect way to incorporate those skills as well as tie in what I learned in my Digital Media Engagement minor. Outside of my academics I keep myself busy with my numerous hobbies. I love being able to go outside and walk around. Whether it is to go to a cafe or to a store, or just wandering around for fun. Moreover, I love photography and scrapbooking. Being able to capture memories in a fun and unique way means a lot to me. I also love being able to spend time with my friends as well as make new ones!
