Top 10 Netflix Shows to Binge Watch This Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

It is the ultimate first world problem- the struggle to find a good show to binge watch on Netflix. With hundreds of series to choose from Netflix can often be overwhelming and lead to endless scrolling. Here are the top ten best shows to binge watch on Netflix:

Parks and Recreation

Parks and Recreation is one of the most feel-good shows ever to grace the television screen. With its lovable characters, quick wit, and positive outlook, Parks and Recreation makes it almost impossible for the viewer not to smile. This comedy has seven seasons and stars Amy Poehler and Chris Pratt.

Breaking Bad

This critically acclaimed drama has won a plethora of  Emmys for a reason. It is absolutely excellent television. With brilliant acting, top-notch cinematography, and suspenseful plot lines, Breaking Bad keeps you engaged and wanting more. If you are somehow unaware, Breaking Bad follows Walter White,a family man and chemistry teacher, who resorts to selling meth to provide for his family after learning he has lung cancer.

Lost

Lost takes the idea of being stranded on a deserted island with strangers and makes it mythical and almost spiritual. With a diverse cast of characters, Lost has a lot to say about the human condition. What makes Lost so special is that each character has at least one episode dedicated to their background story. Viewers really get to know the characters and by the end of the show they almost feel like family. Along with well developed characters Lost has plenty of twists and turns to keep the viewer interested.

The X-Files

If you are looking for a bonafide classic television show, then The X-Files is a staple. With nine seasons currently on Netflix, there is a lot to binge. The X-Files has a little something for everyone. If you are a science-fiction or supernatural fan, you will love the monster-of-the-week episodes. If you are a suspense fan, the main mythology episodes revolving around a government conspiracy may interest you. If you love romance, Mulder and Scully’s slow burning relationship is filled with unresolved sexual tension to keep you watching until they finally get together.

Bob’s Burgers

This animated comedy will appeal to fans of Futurama and Archer. Bob’s Burgers follows the dry Bob Belcher, owner of a burger restaurant, and his delightfully wacky family. With its offbeat, zany humor and quotable characters, Bob’s Burgers is a blast to watch.

Stranger Things

Chances are you have most likely heard of Stranger Things. Since its Netflix debut in July, the show has received tons of hype and acclaim. The show is a sci-fi horror revolving around the mysterious disappearance of a young boy in a small town. Each episode has twists and turns that makes you want to keep watching. Stranger Things also appeals to a nostalgic audience as it is set in the 1980s and draws influences from ‘80s media.

Arrested Development

Arrested Development is a cult comedy series that follows the Bluth family, a dysfunctional family that run a company. Their world is turned upside down when the patriarch of the family is arrested for fraud. The smart humor throughout the show is what makes it so great. There are many jokes that are running gags and some that may take a few seconds for the viewer to fully get because they are so clever. It is this humor that makes the show quotable and insanely watchable

Friends

If you have not yet watched this hit comedy series, get on it! It is never too late to start watching classics and Friends is a must. Friends is an easy watch; it is something to watch on a cozy afternoon or to unwind after work. With ten seasons on Netflix, there is plenty to watch and after watching a few seasons you will feel like Rachel Green and company are your friends too.

Jessica Jones

This series based on the Marvel comic books is not as lighthearted as The Avengers or other Marvel based media. The series is a dark, suspenseful drama following Jessica Jones, played by Krysten Ritter, a private investigator who has supernatural strength. Jones is hunted by a previous abuser, a powerful man named Kilgrave, who can control people’s minds. Jones is the kind of badass but very flawed female character television so desperately needs. Plus there is a cliffhanger almost every episode which will keep you binging until the wee hours of the morning.

House of Cards

The acting alone makes House of Cards binge watchable. Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright’s performances as Frank and Claire Underwood respectively are raw, visceral and pack an emotional punch. It is a political drama, but even if you are not interested in politics, the plot lines are juicy and are still extremely well done. As the episodes pass, dramatic bombshell after bombshell is dropped.
