How to Deal: Lack of sleep

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tennessee chapter.

Collegiettes™ are no secret to lack of sleep. Whether we’re out all night partying, up all night studying, or just not accustomed to waking up for 8 a.m.’s, we frequently attend class tired. Some days you can make it through class with heavy eyelids and a sleeping brain, but how do you wake yourself up on the important days?

I’m the worst about getting enough sleep. It’s really become an annoyance now that I have an early class. Some mornings I really struggle to keep my eyes open… much less pay attention to what we’re actually talking about. So I did a little research to find some tips on waking up.

Drink Coffee but not everyday! If you drink coffee everyday, it losses it’s affect. But if you save your coffee days for when you’re really tired or really need to wake up, you’ll notice much better results.

Eat peppermint. Delish.com says it’s the scent of peppermint that triggers alertness. My mom always told me to keep peppermints in the car because they’d help me stay awake if I got tired while driving. So why not take that tip and apply it school.

“Exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy…” Elle Woods had some solid insight on Legally Blonde. Beyond making you happy, exercise will help your body wake up and be ready for the day. So if you’re sleepy, walk to class instead of driving.

Get up immediately, even though it’s hard. I’m a big fan of shutting my alarm off and hugging the covers to the last possible moment. But you will feel much fresher if you get straight out of bed and get going. Don’t give your body any extra time to be lethargic.

Eat fruit in the morning to give your body natural sugars and energy. My roommate is a big fan of apples for breakfast when she’s having trouble getting going in the mornings.

Crank up some tunes is my personal favorite. Turn on some energetic, loud music and wake your brain and body up right. Music can impact your mood and get your day started on a possitive note. So dance around the room while you get ready to wake up and take on the day.

Who are we kidding? We’re not going to change our sleeping habits any time soon. So make sure you’re making healthy choices when it comes to waking yourself up after a short night of sleep.
