There is a nation-wide epidemic of excitement from Missoni coming to Target, yet Knoxvillians don’t get to bask in that beautiful, zigzag glory because we are too “small town” for high fashion.
Target made a great business deal. And for that, they are being applauded. Missoni, an iconic Italian-bred high-end designer brand with bold zigzag patterns in shades of orange, magenta, sky blue and green, is unmistakable, and everyone wants to get their hands on it (for a fraction of the price, at that). So, Target representatives and the Missoni family shook hands and began creating a limited time only line for fashion-hungry Americans.
As for Knoxville, there are two kinds of women: the ones who got to the Target and sadly found that the shelves were baron except for a gorgeous king-size comforter that would look ridiculous on your full-size bed but contemplated buying it anyway (which is me) OR the ones who are now proud owners of a Missoni sweater and using it as their Fall staple this season (of whom I am jealous).
My initial thought for writing a piece about Missoni this week was to do the ladies of UT and myself a favor and find out when the next shipments of Missoni clothing were going to fly back on the shelves of the Knoxville Target superstores. This was obviously so we could all camp out on the sidewalks together and bombard the racks like it’s a limited-time-only collection…oh wait, it is. But when I called every single store, and I mean any Target within a 20-mile radius in every direction from campus, to inquire about shipment dates, I got the saddest news I’ve heard in a while: THERE ARE NOT GOING TO BE ANY MORE SHIPMENTS MADE TO ANY KNOXVILLE TARGET OF MISSONI ITEMS.
My heart broke, a tear came to my eye and I choked up as each manager eventually had to hang up on me. Their reasoning was that Knoxville “is too small town with not enough demand for high fashion”. Excuse me? I beg to differ; we Southern girls, or any UT girl in general, is definitely worthy of the chance to adorn herself in high fashion, only now we are not even given the option.
Some people have been questioning why this “Missoni for Target” is such a phenomenon and for me the answer is simple. I’m a starving college girl, hungry for fashion! I absolutely don’t have the money for the real thing unless I wanted to give up my weekly trip to Kroger and Tin Roof…for the school year.
Nonetheless, us HerCampus readers are smart, innovative college women who are going to be stylish no matter what we wear. And besides, who really wants the same sweater that ever girl in “the big cities” is going to be wearing this Autumn, not me….right? Or we can go on eBay and buy items from the women who bought $2,000 worth of merchandise the first hour the store was open.
