2 Ways and 3 Reasons to Get into Owning Plants: From a Plant Killer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

If you’re anything like me, you cannot keep a plant or flower alive for longer than two months at a time. Which sucks. The idea of having this leafy-boho room has been at the forefront of my mind for the longest time. Sure the idea sounds nice, but after owning my first plant, a Kalanchoe, in 2020, I killed it. Not intentionally, of course, but I was full of blame for this plant’s short-lived life that was promised to prosper for many years, at least according to the card on the pot. This experience highly discouraged me from ever owning a plant ever again. But now, nearly a year and a half later, I am determined to try again.

I constantly read about the pros of owning plants and how it is obviously great for the environment to curate and take care of life. But killing one plant already sent me down a hole of thoughts that I can’t do this, and maybe this is not for me? Of course, you might have thought this, too, if you’ve ever murdered an innocent plant. But have no fear, these tips are reminders as to why raising plants is essential and why you should and can do this!

How To Find A Plant

1. It Is All a Process

You’re not going to go in knowing everything all at once. And you probably won’t know what plant you want to buy. It can seem stressful, but you want to make the process stress-free and smooth. Good inspiration is looking through Pinterest to see what kind of plants would look best in your house or room.

2. Research is Daunting but Worth It

Now that you have found a few plants that would look appealing in your home, it is time to do some research to see if these plants can even sustain life in your chosen environment. Researching is a painstaking process; trust me, I know. But knowing what is best for your plant babies and how and where they will thrive is utterly necessary.

Reasons To Own At Least One Plant

3. Taking Care of Plants is Therapeutic

Having a plant in your home requires a routine, and as humans, we are creatures of habit. Whether you agree or not, plants add structure to your life. After all, you are taking care of something and making sure it won’t die, so that definitely is purposeful.

4. You are Helping the Environment

Of course, you can never have too many plants on this earth. We need plants like humans, and they need us. Nowadays, huge cities and neighborhoods are urbanizing, pushing out plants, and bringing in stone-cold concrete. Having a plant can help the environment in this case, and of course, it can help your sanity to see something green besides roads and sidewalks.

5. Plants Liven up Your Space

Who could forget the aesthetic? Plants are great at livening up space. That’s why they sell fake ones. But do yourself a favor and don’t buy an artificial plant. Buy the real one. Have the natural plant aromas and colors fill your space.

Regardless of where your plant journey has started or where you are at right now in the process, Owning plants and caring for them is totally worth it. It can be discouraging at first, and you may kill a plant, but with a lot of care and energy, you can have a thriving ecosystem in the center of your home.
