5 Tips to Survive Finals Week

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Texas chapter.

It’s that time of the year again! The last stretch before a very long and well-deserved break (because Thanksgiving break didn’t really count). With only a couple weeks left of the fall semester, finals week is right around the corner, and students and professors alike are working hard to prepare themselves for what is to come.

But before you begin to stress out about your exams, here are a few quick things to keep in mind!

  1. Space out your study sessions so that you don’t overwhelm yourself. It’s much easier said than done, but try to divide your study sessions so that you don’t spend chunks of time overloading your brain with too much information! Your ideal study session should be about 45 minutes with a 15 minute break, or an hour with a 20 minute break, etc. Allowing yourself to take breaks, stretch out, and breathe will help your brain retain information better and focus more.

  1. But don’t let your breaks take over your studying. On the contrary, be sure to study more than you break. Study with a friend and help keep each other focused.

  1. Take care of yourself. Sleeping may seem impossible since every hour you sleep could be an hour of studying, but it is still important to get in a decent amount of sleep each night in order to successfully complete your finals! Be sure to eat, shower, exercise to relieve stress, and take care of yourself. You need to be in your best shape in order to survive finals!

  1. Focus. Get away from any possible distractions. Get out of your room to avoid the temptation to nap or do other things, like laundry. Study with friends to help each other focus. Go to a coffee shop, library, or another quiet place to get in your study hours. Turn off your phone and silence your laptop notifications. The more you focus, the more efficient your studying will be, and the more accomplished you will feel.

  1. And last but not least, always remember…

Just kidding. You are a strong, independent, intelligent woman and you will ace these finals! May the odds-and the curves-be ever in your favor.
